THE PAINTING FLOATING FEATHER - CA. 1680
Original: oil on canvas 144 x 159 cm, wxh
The original name of this painting is 'A pelican and other fowl near a water basin'.
The painting shows a water basin with a pelican, helmeted cassowary, flamingo, black-crowned crane and other water birds, and the feather floating on the water. The basin is in a beautiful setting of trees and rolling countryside.
On the Floating Feather you can see how meticulously and in detail Melchior d'Hondecoeter made his paintings. He made oil sketches of the animals that he could later use as examples.
This painting, like the one entitled Menagerie, was commissioned by King Willem III and Mary for the 't Loo Palace.
