The painting shows a well-to-do seated young woman of 23 in an almost Greek setting with columns and vases filled with grapevines. The hound next to her is a symbol of perseverance. The painting is made in the neoclassical style and is very detailed.
Alida Christina Assink was born on 19 August 1810 in Zaandam. In 1839 Alida married Hendrik Provo Kluit in Amsterdam. They have 3 sons and 2 daughters together. It is a well-to-do family. Hendrik is a graduated lawyer, director of the police in Amsterdam, mayor of Amsterdam from 1853 till 1854 and member of the 2nd chamber. Alida dies in The Hague on 6 October 1886.
