THE PAINTING CHILDREN OF THE SEA - 1872
Original: oil on canvas 93,5 x 48,5 cm, wxh
This painting shows the poor fishermen's children who lived by the North Sea, in Zandvoort, Katwijk or Scheveningen. They are playing with a simple homemade boat and the oldest is carrying the youngest. One suspects a message behind this performance. The boy carrying his sister on his back is supposed to symbolise the tough life at sea.
Jozef Israëls was first struck by the hard, poor and simple life of the fishermen's community in Zandvoort when he was there to recover from an illness in 1855. From 1863 onwards, Jozef often painted this kind of subject with warm colours and a beautiful use of dark and light.
