INFORMATION
Original: oil on canvas 89,5 x 101,5 cm bxh
The painting depicts the hard, hard and sober life of the herring fishermen. The 'bomschuit' is a ship with a flat bottom and a broad hull, so that they could be stranded on the beach by the surf. There were no harbours in those days.
The style is from the Hague School and these paintings were very popular among the Dutch, but also in America.
Jacob did a number of paintings of this kind and in 1885 he even did an almost identical one to this one, but slightly smaller and lighter.
The painting belongs to the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
