THE PAINTING PORTRAIT OF A COUPLE FRENCH NECK
Original: oil on canvas 166,5 x 140 cm wxh
On the Portrait of a couple (c. 1622) by Frans Hals depicts a laughing couple, probably Isaac Abrahamsz Massa and Beatrix van der Laen. The couple looks familiar and are sitting close together. At the time, it was unusual to pose together like this. The couple married in April 1622 and were friends of the painter, which made posing like this possible. The couple is central to the painting.
Portrait of a couple tells of love and fidelity. On the couple's left, a thistle is depicted, with the nickname male fidelity, and on the right, a love garden is shown.
