The painting shows a portrait of the wealthy fabric merchant Edward Wallis (1621-1684). Eduard is sitting in a black cloth suit on a red chair, hat in hand, looking to the right.
This painting is the counterpart of the portrait of Maria van Strijp, his wife since 09 April 1647, and was commissioned by the couple. Johannes also painted a portrait of Maria van Strijp's mother, Adriana Croes.
