THE PAINTING ANDRIES SILENCE AS STANDARD-BEARER - 1641

Original: oil on canvas 78.5 x 104 cm, wxh

This painting is a militia piece by Johannes Verspronck, with Andries Stilte as its subject. Andries is dressed in a pink costume with a lace collar finished with a satin bow. On his head he wears a large black hat with feathers. The sash and banner are a beautiful shade of blue that stands out well against the neutral background. Andries' family coat of arms can be seen in the top left-hand corner. Andries commissioned Johannes to paint him in this rich pink costume when he was still a bachelor. If he were a married man, he would have to wear an elegant black outfit. Andries Stilte was born in Haarlem and died in 1675.
