Like most of Aert van der Neer's works, this painting is a landscape painting. On the river past a town, with snowy roofs and a windmill in the distance, people are out on the ice having fun with skates and sledges.
Many of his masterpieces contain imagined rivers and water features. This painting, too, will be an imagined scene by Aert. And who knows, maybe Aelbert Cuyp, Aert's friend, also helped here by painting some lively figures and animals.
