SELF-PORTRAIT OF VINCENT VAN GOGH
Original: oil on cardboard 34 x 42 cm bxh
Date: 1887
Vincent moved to Paris in 1886 after hearing about the new colourful art of French painting from his brother Theo. Since models were too expensive to practice with, he soon applied this new art to self-portraits. Here he painted himself as a fashionably dressed Parisian, with loose, rhythmic brushstrokes in striking colours.
