INFORMATION
Original: oil on canvas, 129,3x 113,5cm, wxh
Date: 1885
The painting shows shell-fishing by horse and cart and swing nets, on high wheels otherwise the fishermen could not cross the dunes due to the weight. We see nets along the tide line and from boats. The shell fisherman (schulper) collected the shells from the sea and took them to a lime kiln to be burnt into shell chalk. The lime was used for mortar. The gulls look for something tasty to eat now that the sand has been churned up.
The painting belongs to the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
