Date: 1847 - 1899
The painting shows a shellfisherman (schulper) catching shells with a trawl along the flood line and throwing them onto his cart. The cart has high wheels, otherwise it would not be able to cross the dunes due to its heavy weight. The shell fisherman would collect the shells from the sea and take them to a lime kiln to be burnt into shell lime in the lime kilns. The shell lime was used for mortar.
The painting belongs to the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
