FLOWER STILL LIFE
Painter: Hans Bollongier (Haarlem, c. 1600 - Haarlem 1672-75)
Year: 1644
Official title: Flower Still Life
Original: Oil on panel, 21 x 27 cm, wxh
About the painting
A bouquet of striped tulips, a rose, an orange lily, a red and white carnation, violets and a cyclamen. The painting is also described as Flower Still Life with Snail. It is an imaginary bouquet: in reality, these flowers did not bloom at the same time. Flowers were something special, and therefore worth 'portraying'. Striped tulips were the most popular; here clearly depicted by the artist.
About Hans Bollongier
Hans Bollongier was born in Haarlem and has always lived and worked there. He belonged to the Dutch school and specialised in flower still lifes, especially in the strong light/dark contrast, the chiaroscuro.
In Haarlem, the centre of flower cultivation, Hans Bollongier was the specialist for flower still lifes. He always painted the flowers somewhat thicker than the background, so that they are somewhat in relief.
This masterpiece by Hans Bollongier is part of our collection of 'Haerlemsche Meesters' and is on display at the Frans Hals Museum location Hof in Haarlem.
