The little street, view of houses in Delft by Johannes Vermeer
The Little Street is a painting by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer and is also known as View of houses in Delft. The painting The Little Street is one of only two known townscapes by Vermeer.
The painting The alley shows an alley with parts of houses in Delft. The ordinary life illustrated in the painting belongs to a different theme from Vermeer's previous biblical and mythological themes. The alley was probably painted around 1658 and has been in the Rijksmuseum since the 1920s.
The scrub gutter in the middle of the painting indicates that the houses, Vlamingstraat 40-42 in Delft, are close to a canal. The composition is exciting and balanced. The brick walls, with their whitewash and cracks, seem almost to be touchable. Vermeer's aunt Ariaentgen Claes and her children lived in the house on the right of the painting from around 1645 to 1670.
