A commission for a militia piece in Amsterdam was rarely granted to a painter from outside the city. Frans Hals from Haarlem received the commission as an exception, but soon found himself at odds with the militia. The Amsterdam painter Pieter Codde then had to finish the seven figures on the right. He imitated Hals's style as well as he could, even though he usually painted very smoothly and delicately on small formats.
The painting is part of the Rijksmuseum collection.
