The painting shows a menagerie including 2 squirrel monkeys from Central America, 2 white yellow-crested cockatoos from Australia, a grey red-tailed parrot from Africa and a red female loris, on a chain, from Indonesia situated on a balustrade and marble bench.
A menagerie is the predecessor of today's zoo. Wild and exotic animals were kept in captivity by wealthy people.
This painting was commissioned by King Willem III for his private quarters in 't Loo.
