SERENADE BY JUDITH LEYSTER
Original: oil on panel 35 x 45,5 cm bxh
Date: 1629
The singing lute player is depicted from a low vantage point. Because his beautiful red, gold and black striped trousers appear out of focus, the illusion is created that the viewer is looking up at him from close by. Judith Leyster was one of the rare professional women artists of her time. Read more about her life and work on her painter page.
The painting belongs to the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
