THE PAINTING: FLOWERS IN A WAN-LI VASE AND SHELLS 1640-1650
Original: oil on panel 43 x 53 cm wx h
In a Chinese porcelain vase, Balthasar painted a beautiful bouquet of carefully selected, special flowers. In the foreground are shells from faraway countries, insects and a small lizard. This carefully selected composition stands on a stone plinth.
The Wan-Li vase was used by Balthasar earlier in the 1630 painting, 'Still Life with Fruit on a Tin-Shell and Wan-Li Plate'.
