The painting Vase with Flowers by Jan Davidsz. de Heem - 1670
Original: oil on canvas 52,6 x 74,2 cm bxh
Compared to flower still lifes from the early 17th century, this painting is a true explosion of flowers. Here, there is no stiff bouquet, but a colourful profusion of flowers hanging over the edge of the vase. The reflection in the glass bottle is remarkable; it shows the studio window with a cloudy sky and some objects in the window sill.
De Heem was the most influential flower painter of his time. He lived in Antwerp for several periods and there became acquainted with the exuberance of the South.
This beautiful, colourful still life by Jan Davidsz. de Heem is on display in the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
