Painting The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer - ca 1660

Original: oil on canvas 41 x 45,5 cm bxh

The milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer

The Milkmaid (c. 1660) is one of Johannes Vermeer's masterpieces. The painting depicts a maid, recognisable as such by her simple dress and headdress. In the painting, the woman is pouring milk into a jug, giving the painting its name. Vermeer condensed this everyday act into an impressive painting

On the painting stands the milkmaid in the middle of a room. To her left is a window, through which light is entering. To her left is a table with a rug. On the table are various wares, including a wicker basket with bread, a jug, bowl and copper pot. The milkmaid's attention is focused on the bowl into which she is pouring the milk. Apart from the stream of milk, nothing seems to move in the painting. To the right of the sparsely furnished room, a stove is depicted. The wall behind the milkmaid makes clear that the room may have a past. Holes can be seen in the wall and a nail is sticking out.

The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer was auctioned in 1765, when Leendert Pieter de Neufville sold the collection. In 1908, the work was purchased by the Rembrandt Society for the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it can still be admired today.
