View of Delft by Johannes Vermeer
This is the most famous cityscape from the Golden Age. The interplay of light and shadow, the impressive cloudy sky and the subtle reflections on the water make this painting an absolute masterpiece.
We see Delft from the south. It is almost windless, and the city exudes tranquillity. Vermeer brought that calm to his composition by creating three horizontal bands: water, city and sky. And by painting the buildings less cluttered than they actually were.
View of Delft is on display in the Mauritshuis in The Hague
