FLOWERPOT WITH CHINESE CHIVES BY VINCENT VAN GOGH
Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890), Paris, January-February 1887
Original: oil on canvas 22 x 31,9 cm bxh
This simple still life with a jar of chives stands against a background of a decorative pattern. It is not clear exactly what Van Gogh painted here: perhaps wallpaper or a piece of an oriental carpet. The symmetry of the scene is broken by the sprigs of chives to the right of the pot.
Common chives have hollow, round leaves; Chinese chives have flat, pointed leaves.
This masterpiece by Vincent van Gogh can be seen in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Read more about the life and work of Vincent van Gogh on his painter page.
