THE PAINTING SELF-PORTRAIT WITH STRAW HAT
Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890), Paris, August-September 1887
Original: oil on cardboard, 32.8 x 40.9 cm bxh
In light summery clothes, the artist looks at us inquisitively, with one blue and one green eye. For this self-portrait Van Gogh used a cheap medium: cardboard. On it he applied an underlay with purple stripes. The pigment in this, however, has faded considerably over time. Some faint pink stripes can still be seen on the shoulder area. Van Gogh's meticulous colour composition has thus been lost. Originally, the purple background contrasted with his yellow straw hat, for example.
This masterpiece by Vincent van Gogh can be seen in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Read more about the life and work of Vincent van Gogh on his painter page.
