The Life of Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriel

Paul Joseph was born on 5 July 1828 in Amsterdam. His parents are the sculptor/painter Paul Joseph Gabriel and Trijntje Peters. His father dies when Paul is only 5 years old.

In the years 1840 to 1843, Paul studied at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten (state academy for visual arts) in Amsterdam, where he was taught by Anton Mauve and Willem Roelofs, among others. After wandering around the Netherlands, Haarlem and Oosterbeek, Paul ended up in Brussels in 1884, where he was made a Knight of the Leopold Order in 1875. After returning from Brussels in 1884, Paul settled in Scheveningen where he became a member of the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij and the Pulchri Studio in The Hague.

Gabriel painted not only landscapes, but also portraits, still lifes, animals and townscapes. He also joined the Hague School but distanced himself from the shades of grey used by other painters. colourist of the Hague School called. Paul likes a light palette with bright colours so that his paintings look cheerful. One of his pupils, Willem Bastiaan Tholen, shares his love of colour. Other pupils of Paul include Bernard van Beek, Taco Mesdag and his wife Geesje Mesdag-van Calcar.

Paul is married to Helene Marie Madelaine Elisabeth Urbain; the marriage remains childless. Paul died on 23 August 1903 in Scheveningen.
