THE MERRY DRINKER BY FRENCH NECK
Original: oil on canvas 66,5 x 81 cm, wxh
Date: 1630
The happy drinkerThe actual title, A gunman holding a birch leaf, is a famous painting by the Dutch painter Frans Hals. The exact identity of the person portrayed has never been established, but the clothing suggests that it is a merchant in militia attire and is dated 1628-1630.
The mirth of the man depicted is relative. The man offers the viewer a glass of wine with his lips slightly open, indicating that he may want to say something. His reddened cheeks and his twinkling eyes suggest that he is surprised to see the viewer.
Frans Hals creates a lively and moving impression with his quick, loose and spontaneous brushwork. The Merry Drinker gives the impression of not having posed. The physical reality of the jolly drinker is unprecedentedly powerful, especially for a painting from that period.
