THE PAINTING: STILL LIFE WITH CHEESES BY FLORIS CLAESZ VAN DIJCK

Original: oil on panel 111,2 x 82,2 cm bxh

In this famous painting Still life with cheeses by Floris Claesz van Dyck Fruit, bread and three cheeses are displayed on a precious covered table. The food and objects, including the pewter plate that protrudes from the edge of the table, seem palpably real.

This painting shows great technical skill in the field of light and shadow effects. On the left, an apple peel hangs from the table, providing an optical contrast. The peel appears brown and it is therefore unlikely to have come from the freshly cut apple.

The colour reproduction of the apples on the dish, the detailed earthenware jug and the Delft blue dish also testify to high technical qualities. All objects are arranged with precision in relation to each other. All materials and surfaces are shown off to their best advantage. Creating this kind of still life took a lot of time and energy, which made it difficult for painters to earn a living with this kind of painting.
