THE PAINTING VIEW OF OLINDA - 1662
Original: oil on canvas 172,5 cm x 107,5 cm, wxh
The painter Frans Jansz Post here paints the cathedral of Olinda in Brazil in a tropical setting. He paints a large number of animals, most of which are hidden in the left-hand corner among the plants. We see an armadillo, a monkey, a sloth, an anteater and a lizard. Unfortunately, the cathedral was later badly damaged when the Dutch conquered the area from the Portuguese in the 17th century, lured by the success of sugar plantations.
